Apocalypse vs. Sustainable Futures: pandemics, destruction, famine, and Hope
Do you ever feel like you are living in a dystopian novel? Do you wish that you could figure out how much in your readings was based on facts vs. pure fiction? Do you ever wonder about the likelihood of these dystopian futures? Then this is the course for you!
This year we are using four main fiction texts and scientific studies to explore climate change, pandemics, transgenic organisms, resource scarcity, extinctions, and a range of other current topics. These books are all available as cheap used books, keeping participation costs low. These authors are brilliant, diverse, and relevant, and we are so excited to read them with you: New York 2140, Zone One, Pale Rider, Oryx and Crake.
In non-covid times, we also incorporate field trips to create lasting memories of the peril and beauty of our current world.
